2012 John M. Twaddle Sportsmanship Award

Congratulations to Dylan Bouten!!!!!

Dylan was presented by the Twaddle Family on Thursday, January 12th at ERHS Hockey game with this years

John M. Twaddle Sportsmanship Award.

The John M. Twaddle Sportsmanship Award was initiated in the Fall of 1996.  This award is dedicated to the memory of John M. Twaddle.  At the age of 13 years, he was killed in a traffic accident.

John was active in Elk River Youth Hockey for several years.  He participated in both the House and Travel programs.  He always maintained a positive attitude toward the sport of hockey.

Although he died at a very young age, John has established a reputation for being an aggressive, yet fair player.  He gave 100% in games and practices.  We will always remember John's infectious smile and his unparalleled enthusiasm for the game.

The John M. Twaddle Sportsmanship Award is presented near the end of each hockey season to a player from an Elk River Bantam level team who exhibits the following characteristics:

  • Plays for the love of the game
  • Has a well developed sense of fair play
  • Respects coaches, teammates, opponents and officials
  • encourages teamwork over individual accomplishment
  • Displays a positive "never quit" attitude
  • Always tried to improve and develop new skills
  • Shows satisfactory school performance

Minnesota Hockey Announces Rule Changes

Minnesota_Hockey_Logo_Newsletter

Minnesota Hockey Members,

In light of recent injuries in high school hockey and with continuing efforts to reduce the risks involved in hockey, the Minnesota Hockey Board of Directors adopted the following rule changes.  Effective Wednesday, January 25, 2012, the minimum penalty for boarding and checking from behind infractions will be increased.  The first level of penalty for Boarding, Rule 603, will become a major and a Checking from Behind, Rule 608, will become a major plus a misconduct.  These changes apply to all Minnesota Hockey sanctioned league, tournament and exhibition (scrimmage) games and will be in effect until the end of the 2011-12 season (July 31, 2012).  The effectiveness of these changes will be evaluated going forward.

These rule changes are being adopted on a pilot basis and all rules and definitions in the USA Hockey  2011-13 Official Rules of Ice Hockey book remain in effect.  Only the first levels of penalties for the two infractions stated above are increased.  Officials need to make these calls and must have the support of the coaches and parents if increasing the consequences for boarding and checking from behind is to have a positive effect.

These revised rules are only part of what is needed to make hockey as safe as possible.  A culture change is required that will no longer encourage dangerous and intimidation play.  Parents, coaches, officials, players and administrators, need to work together, to make that change.  Education, skill development and respect (Fair Play) are key in making the culture change and Minnesota Hockey is committed to continuing to provide leadership in these areas.

During this pilot, HEP Fair Point calculations are not changing. When tabulating total Fair Play penalty minutes, the "equivalency" penalty minute for the first level boarding and checking from behind remain the same;  Boarding, 2 minute minor and checking from behind, 2 minute minor and 10 minute misconduct.

The announcement below provides additional background.

Hockey is a great game and wouldn't be possible without all of the efforts of coaches, officials, administrator and parents.  For all your work we say thank you and ask for your cooperation in implementing these changes.

Thank you,

Dave Margenau

President, Minnesota Hockey

IN LOVING MEMORY

On Tuesday August 10th, Jon McLaughlin passed away suddenly.

We lost a close friend, coach and former ERYHA President.

Jon was a big part of the Elk River Association and will be greatly missed.

He has coached, managed, led the ERYHA Board and donated hundreds of hours to help our association succeed.

He touched many lives in his short life and we are all better off for having known him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Tammi, Jered, Jordan and Blake during this difficult time.

A MEMORIAL FUND HAS BEEN SET UP AND CAN BE SENT TO:

MINNESOTA HOCKEY - PARENTS PAGE

Parents, did you know that there were 35,324 boys and 8,361 girls registered to play youth hockey in Minnesota last season?  Did you kow that there were about 6,200 boys and 3,900 girls playing high school hockey?  Did you know that there were about 250 Minnesota boys and about 95 Minnesota girls on D1 college hockey rosters?  Did you know there were 20 Minnesota born players in the NHL and that the first professional women's team in Minnesota began only this year?

The chances of your son or daughter getting a D1 college scholarship is minute.  The chances of your son or daughter playing professional hockey are miniscule.

While children can and should have dreams they, and you, should understand the long odds that exist.  They, and you, should also understand the hours and years of hard work involved beyond scheduled practices and games in order to make those dreams come true.

Please visit our Hockey Education Program (HEP) page to learn more about keeping youth hockey and youth sports in general in perspective.

Hockey should be fun for kids, not work!  After all, it is a game.
